Group A :Day 4 Kuala Muda

Day 4 Kuala Muda

The day started at 9 am sharp in the BAKAS(Bekalan Air Kesihatan Alam Sekeliling) unit at the District Kuala Muda. It took us some 10 minutes to find the office of the unit but under the guidance of our responsible leader, we manage to reach the office exactly at the time, as it was planned.

We were welcomed by the head of the BAKAS unit, Mr. Kamarrudin Ismail. He introduced 2 of his assistants to us (there were only 3 staffs in the unit). Then, Mr. Kamarrudin explained to us about the details of the unit.

BAKAS is short for ‘Bekalan Air dan Kesihatan Alam Sekeliling’ (Water and Environment Health). The general objective of this unit is to improve the health status of the residents in the peripheral area through a healthy and complete environment. And, the general objective is performed through:
· Reduce the incidence of infectious disease
· Maximized the involvement of the village in improving the hygiene of the surrounding environment.
· Improve the public awareness of healthy environment, through various education programme.
· Confirm 100% set up of complete toilet.
· Make sure that all residents receive clean water
· Make sure that all the houses have complete waste and water disposal system.

Apart from that, Mr Kamarrudin also told us about the work of BAKAS unit. There are basically 4 major components: pipe connection to the houses, water disposal system, leaking toilet, solid waste disposal.
The BAKAS unit will coorperate with the water supply unit , when they receive applications for pipe connection, or disposal system defects, and then they will respond to the problems accordingly. Apart from receiving applications from the residents, the staff of the BAKAS will also routinely go to the villages to assess the status of the environmental health of the particular village. He also gave us some detail information about how the yearly subsidi is allocated to improve the water supply system, and their goal is to supply clean water to every corner of the housing area by 2010. By now, about 97 % has been completed. Their last project was to bulid wells for the village people as their main water supply is 2.5km away from their houses. They've completed it by Nov last year. Approximately 5 houses will share one well but as the houses in that kampung was far apart, they built one well for 2 houses. We too took some pictures from the scrap book of pictures taken there last year.

That’s all from the briefing of the head of the BAKAS unit. As our DHO posting is just not at the right time (it’s the beginning of the year, the budget from the government is not even release), therefore there is no happening on-going projects. So, there is no field trip from BAKAS unit. Mr. Kamarrudin releases us at 12.30 pm.

And , this is the end of our day.

Oooppsssss….. Thats not the end!!!

We were given a chance to go to the field with the fogging team from the vector control unit in the evening!

Fully equipped ourselves (camera, napkins-shirt), we gathered at the vector control unit at 5 pm. There was a short briefing session with one of the staff from the vector control unit. The staff introduced us all the weapons that will be used during the war against the mosquitoes. He showed us the mask, suit, ear-plug that will be wear by the ‘first-line soldiers’.

At about 6pm, we departed to Taman Ria Jaya, the battle field.

Upon arrival, we followed the staff to inform all the residents in the Taman about the fogging activities that will be started at 6.40pm, asked them to keep their house windows wide open, cover the food and stay outdoor when we fog the area.

"Bu Bang" (Spray the Mosquitoes, literally)

6.40 pm, fogging activities started. There were about 8 of the staff from the vector control unit doing the thermal fogging. They walked into the house, covered all the corners of the house, especially the drains, high-potential Aedes mosquitoes breeding areas, etc.

Shortly, ultra-low-volume (ULV) fogging started. The ULV track went around the Taman slowly.

Well, the whole process took about 1 hour. After having a photograph session with the fogging team, we left and end our day with a grand dinner ( + malathion odour all over our body)
