Group A : Day 1 Kuala Muda District

Now the Photos have been processed and being post it... and we had add the some details with this photo slide show!!

First day in Kuala Muda was suprisingly different when we went there visiting it for the 1st time in our 1st year. All 11 of us gathered there at the lobby at 7.30am sharp and while we were waiting anxiously, we were ask to have breakfast first as the briefing would only start at 8.30am by Mr Berhanudin.
After giving us the schedule and walk us through it with quite a number of time changes, we were taken in charged by Dr Narrizah who were replacing the Head district officer who was not there today. She brief us through the entire programme and took a lecture for us about family health, a very jovial person she is, jokingly throughout the whole session which made us feel more comfortable even though it was our first day there.
Lunch time in SP has never been so fun & fulfilling..haha..though quite a few members were somewhere else, we had a superb full lunch and even some delicious thumbs up desert nearby which contributes to the feeling of extreme sleepiness throughout the hot hot afternoon in SP.
Lucky for us, the sister in maternal and child health was able to keep our eyes wide open by showing us very detailly the entire set up in the maternal and child clinic, family planning, pap smear room, some lab works, booking steps for the mothers and vaccinations as well. We also took abundants of pictures for work and of course as well as for happy moments ...

WELL, in the maternal and child health unit, we were guided by a staff nurse of the unit ( the sister in charge, Sister Mariam, were busy with something else that is more important than us :P). We met sister Mariam at the end of the session.

Firstly, it was the family planning unit. There's a special counter in charge by a community nurse. The community nurse will routinely see all the post-partum ladies who come to the clinic for their follow up (this station is part of the follow-up). The community nurse will explain to the ladies about the importance of the family planning and introduce them the various types of contraception( barrier method, condom, OCPs, IUCDs, surgery). Then, the ladies will make their their decision and they can purchase the condoms or OCPs from the counter if they want to. If they choose IUCD or surgery (BTL), the nurse will arrange it for them. We were brief about the details of the OCPs as well.

Then, it was the vaccine storage. We were shown to the 'refrigerators' that store the vaccines. There were 2 'refrigerators' in this unit . The staff nurse will check the temperature twice a day:in the morning, and evening(before they left the work place). We witness a BCG vaccination here.

Next, there were examination rooms (cubicles). Routinely, the antenatal check up were run by the staff nurse here. Pregnant ladies will be examine by the medical officer during booking(first antenatal visit), and also at least once during the pregnancy. The rest of the antenatal visit examination will be done by the staff nurses. During the booking, the details of the mother will be taken, including the menstrual history, symptoms of the pregnancy;detail physical examination, including the weight, height, cardiovascular and respiratory examination, neck examination for thyroid, breast examination to assess the nipple STATUS . Blood test are done routinely for ABO & RH grouping, VDRL, HIV. ( Rubella immunity status will be ask from the history ). Breast feeding counselling is given during the booking itself, and the mother will be reminded again at her 36th weeks visit.

There is a mini-laboratory in this maternal & child health unit. It is run by a laboratory assisstant.

Pap smear room is well equiped with a couch, and speculum, brush... The specimen taken for Pap smear will be sent to a private laboratory.

Well, that's a little bit more detail about our experiences in the maternal & child health unit, Kuala Muda.

Day 2 here we come...!!!!

  1. Dear students of the Kuala Muda group,

It would be nice if you post your activites in detail. For example, when you say set up of maternal and child health clinic, it is not clear as to what is the actual set up.So if you could add the details of the activities and the staff providing these services, it would reflect your experience in an impressive manner.

    Best luck.
